Keeping Hope Alive

We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope- Martin Luther King Jr

Every Monday at the Mission where I mentor homeless kids I see the incredible power of human spirit, to rise above and overcome challenges, at work all around me. I witness a never ending supply of hope, courage and strength both in our mentors and mentees. Young minds struggling to cope with their reality, some that have accepted it and some who vow to break free from it and scale new heights. A daily struggle to keep their mental and emotional balance. But come class time and they are all there to soak up every word of wisdom, every piece of knowledge that can help them be better, do good and get out of their situation. Most of them are skeptical and unsure of how a small class led by a handful of mentors can possibly change what they are going through.

But when they leave- the smile on their faces, sparkle in their eyes and their laughter, tells a remarkable story of healing that has taken place, hope that was restored and a whole new world of possibilities that was revealed to them which they were unaware of before coming to life skills class.

As each mentor connects with a student we discover hidden talents, intelligent minds, emotionally strong individuals who dream of being poets, musicians, athletes, future scientists, teachers, doctors, lawyers, vets, social workers, artists, engineers and much more. Some have already taken steps to make their dreams come true despite their difficult circumstances. Some are in the process of making career choices.

To bring hope and joy to young minds in circumstances where hope is fleeting and joy a rare thing, and to see some of these kids go from being clueless about what to do with their lives to passionately talk about all the things they are going to accomplish and how great their life is going to be, is an incredibly rewarding experience.

You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming- Pablo Neruda

And that right there is a sign of Hope and abundant motivation to keep living hopeful of a better life for myself and for others 🙂
